CNC MACHINING CASE STUDY
Controlled fixturing for a thin-wall, irregular gearbox housing
This complex housing required a machining plan that controlled clamping distortion before final finishing. The process combined planned machining allowance, a dedicated support plate and a staged stress-release sequence.

Original case process imagery: fixture concept and CNC machining setup.
FIXTURING STRATEGY

Temporary machining allowance creates the safe clamping interface.
Build the holding strategy into the part process
The original process retained material at deliberate clamping positions, then used a support plate to maintain rigidity while the irregular housing was roughed.
Allowance was retained at the clamping locations so the fixture could hold the workpiece without loading critical finished surfaces.
The support plate was made 10 mm thicker at the indicated area to provide sufficient strength during machining.
Clamping pads were set 0.1 mm lower to maintain the required flatness and avoid interference.
MACHINING SEQUENCE
Four controlled stages before final geometry
Prepare fixture
Reserve the planned allowance and establish stable support on the tooling plate.
Rough machine
Machine while the housing is supported and the functional surfaces remain protected.
Stress release
Leave the part free for 24–72 hours to reduce internal stress before final finishing.
Finish & remove
Complete final geometry, then remove the temporary process ribs and holding material.

Why the roughing layout matters
Rough machining was planned around the support and clamping concept rather than treating fixturing as a later shop-floor detail.
- Support and clamping are defined before machining starts.
- Critical surfaces are finished only after the stress-release interval.
- Temporary process material is removed at the final stage.
ENGINEERING TAKEAWAY
For irregular housings, distortion control begins with how the part is held.
The fixture access, retained allowance and finishing sequence need to be designed as one system. This case shows the practical role of dedicated support before final CNC machining.
