Material & Finish Compatibility
Not all finishes work on all materials. Use our compatibility matrix below to select the optimal surface treatment for your specific base material.
Aluminum (6061 / 7075 / 5052)
Lightweight, excellent machinability — broadest finish compatibility of any base material.
Note: Aluminum alloys with >2% copper content (e.g. 2024) may have reduced anodizing quality. Consult our engineers for 7075-T6 Type III hardcoat requirements.
Stainless Steel (304 / 316 / 17-4 PH)
High corrosion resistance in raw form. Finishing focuses on aesthetics and enhanced resistance.
Note: 316L is recommended for marine / chloride environments. Passivation does not apply to 400-series ferritic grades without special process adjustment.
Carbon Steel (1018 / 1045 / 4140)
Prone to oxidation — surface treatment is mandatory. Broad coating compatibility.
Note: High-strength steels (>1100 MPa / 36 HRC) require hydrogen embrittlement bake-out post-plating per ASTM F519. Confirm grade before ordering zinc plating.
Copper & Brass (C101 / C260 / C360)
Excellent electrical / thermal conductivity. Finishes selected to preserve or enhance these properties.
Note: Free-machining brass (C360) contains lead — surface treatments on food-contact or medical parts must use lead-free certified process lines. Declare application at order time.
